I am a both a certified trainer and certified behaviorist. When I am working with a dog, I will use all of my knowledge and experience to develop a training plan. I like to explain to owners why a dog may be acting or responding in a certain way and let them know that there is never just one solution to a problem.
As a 1998 graduate of National K-9 School for Dog Trainers in Columbus, Ohio, I am certified in the following:
Basic and Advanced Obedience
Off leash Obedience
Dog Behavior
Tracking and Scent Detection
Assistance Dog Training
Personal Protection Training
Breed Identification
Dog Nutrition
Since graduating from National K-9, I use the skills that I learned, along with developing new techniques. I use any and all forms of collars, depending on the breed, personality, and size of the dog. My number one goal for all dogs is for them to respect their owners. Respect is reliable, respect helps that loving bond grow stronger, and respect will permit you to communicate in a clear manner. I never want a dog to fear their owner. Fear is not reliable, not fun, and helps no one.
The number one question that I get asked is if I use treats. The answer to that is no (98% of the time). When I work with a dog, their reward will be verbal and touch praise. We want them working for YOU! I will teach you to recognize what kind of touch praise your dog likes so you are sure to give them the right kind of reward. Timing of praise is also very important!
For unwanted behavior, there has to be a consequence. I use a quick leash and collar correction with a short word "no" to let the dog know that the behavior is not what we want. I will immediately motivate the dog to do the correct behavior, and follow that up with praise.
